We loved her very much and she was one of the happiest dogs you would come across. She was always up for giving kisses, having Anthony use her as a pillow, and just to brighten up your day when you are feeling a little low.

We adopted Daisy in Texas almost 15 years ago from Jerry's Pet Store at some mall in Ft. Worth, Texas. We saw her in the window and went to go to see her. We just happened to be looking for a playmate for Lizzie our first Scotty. The clerk took her out, her name was Mauvis back then, and let us play with her. We fell in love instantly and did not care that she did not have papers, we knew she was the right fit for our small family of 2 cats and 1 dog. So, I negotiated her price and we took her home.

On the way home, she was so skittish that she rode on the back of Ross' neck the whole way, kinda like a doggy scarf. It was adorable. She and Lizzie got along fairly quickly and the rest is history. We have so many fond memories of Daisy, from the long car drives from Texas to California, to her first plane ride, to riding on peddle boats on the lake, to just cuddling up on the couch. She also loved to play catch, was often found sleeping with one of her stuffed animals, she loved to give kisses, loved to roll around in either horse or cow poop, and always had a smile on her face. I will miss so many things about her. Dogs definitely love you unconditionally, and Daisy most definitely did.

Last week we had taken her to the vet for checkup because she was breathing funny and the doctor said that she had water in her lungs from pneumonia and she thinks maybe heart disease. Ross brought Lizzie in this week because of her eyes and again told him that another doctor had looked at Daisy's x-rays from last week and he also concurred that the enlarge heart was heart disease. They prescribed her some medication but I guess it did not work. Daisy did have a big heart (not in the same way the doctors said)...and it showed. I wish we (I) had done more. I should have done more. I regret not doing more. But...I just sat back thinking that it will all work out okay and that she would just get over it and get better. Frankly, I was more concerned about Lizzie dying sooner than Daisy.

I remember looking at her as I left the house yesterday and she just kinda gave me a look of I will miss you (or maybe it was do something)...so before leaving I looked back to her and said Goodbye Daisy, I love you. Didn't realize it was the last time I would say that. Ross found her dead, looked like she was sleeping peacefully, when we came home from work last night. He stopped me at the door and told me to take Anthony upstairs, so I did. As Anthony watched TV upstairs, we called to local animal hospitals to find a way to cremate and discard of her body. Ross said she felt very cold already and he wanted to say goodbye, but knew it was no longer her. She was really loved and she will be missed.

We told Anthony what had happened in the best way we could. He cried for about 15 minutes cuddling up to us and saying how Daisy will not be with us anymore and how much he wants her there. He will miss his playmate and sometimes pillow. We all will.

So...RIP Daisy, you have left an impact here on earth and we will miss you but never forget about you.

-Percy

Top Photo by Gloria Plunkett and Middle Photo by Ross Beardsley

Yummy to my Tummy...The Burger Bus

If you live in the Santa Barbara area, don't walk run after The Burger Bus. The characters all seem really interesting and I think it's going to make for good TV. I hope they don't cheese it up too much.

The premise is a high school music teacher torn between doing what he loves and making more money to support his wife and the lifestyle she thinks they should have. Than there's the other teacher who is secretly in love with the music teacher. The football stud turned Glee Club geek, after the music teacher basically fabricated a story to get him to sing in the group and finally you have your Glee Club geeks who are just a great group of of folks with awesome voices. I can't wait for the season to start. If you missed the pilot, you can watch it in full here.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

-Percy

Photo from Fox

Mini Lake Tahoe Vacation - Snow in April?

Ross, Anthony and I were able to have a little vacation with my mom, dad, and my brother and his family in Lake Tahoe. We stayed at a wonderful time share condos, Village at Northstar, and it was the perfect accommodations. Even though "the shopping village" and all the restaurants attached to it was closed until June.

We went to see my niece, Amanda, play volleyball with her team. It was some mega tournament with teen girls competing with each other. It was a little crazy because we walked into a convention center filled with volleyball courts! Seriously there were 60 courts in that place. At any rate it was interesting to see how club sports have evolved since I was in high school.

We arrived Thursday evening at 10pm, after a long ride from Santa Barbara, 10 hours to be exact. Thank goodness that the condo was relaxing and inviting and we didn't have to worry about sleeping on the floor (Asian households someone always has to sleep on the floor event when on vacation), though family friend Tommy had to sleep on the couch. After a Japanese takeout dinner with the family we went to sleep.

I woke up around 6pm, not sure why, but I thought I would look outside and figure out what to do with the kid that day. I opened up a bathroom blind (so I would not wake up Anthony and Ross) and to my surprise it was snowing. I was hoping there would be some snow left so Anthony can feel real snow compared to manufactured snow brought in at the Santa Barbara Zoo, but snowing heavily was a big PLUS!

I was so excited that I had to wake up Ross and Anthony so they could look out, both could care less and went back to sleep. They finally woke up and Anthony got so excited after seeing the huge down pour and large flakes, that he was the first one dressed ready to play in it. I told him that he had to eat breakfast first. So we did and then ventured out to take some initial photos in the snow.

After taking these photos we went back up to the condo to see if everyone else was ready to go and venture out in the snow. My brother and I wanted to take the kids sledding since it was the first time the young ones were ever in snow. Once everyone was dressed as warmly as possible, most of us brought spring clothes including my mom who only brought sandals...she had to borrow a pair of my dad's socks. We ventured out to a little hill just behind our place. Once we were out the kids thought it was a perfect time for a snowball fight. Luckily we brought some winter coats and long pants.

Anthony decided to catch snowflakes on his tongue, I asked him where he saw people doing that and he said, "The Polar Express." I asked him what it tasted like and he said, "Apple Juice."

When the kids saw the hill they were amazed at the amount of snow and just ran into it...no hesitation what so ever. They were amazed at how white and pristine everything was.

After getting adjusted to this white cold stuff, we ventured up the hill to go sledding. All the kids had such a great time, until Anthony's hand got to cold from the snow...no gloves, no place to buy...so he started to cry and yelling COLD COLD COLD. So we took him back to the room to get him warmed up, dried, and showered. All in all he loved it and told us next time to make sure we get him gloves and other water proof stuff so that he can play in it longer. But he had a great time sledding!

The first time in the snow for Anthony was great. We had a wonderful time with the family. I can't wait to do it again and maybe get him into ski lessons so we can go skiing as a family...which means I need to brush up and get fit to do those slopes again. It was wonderful to see where our son will actually be going to school, learning, growing, and playing. The school grounds are great and helped to make us feel comfortable about Anthony being there. Ross really loved the Kindergarten classrooms and said how much he loved the spell of paste and tempura paint. The larger of the two K classrooms was really cool...and had this great sunken area, ala 1970,

A big plus was touring the school with Dr. Babayco, the school's principal, who put us at ease and really made us feel comfortable. He answered our concerns and was genuine in making sure that we as parents and Anthony as a student were at ease. I was so comfortable and thankful for the opportunity with Dr. Babayco that I went straight home and fill out the enrollment paperwork so I could turn in that day. Open enrollment ended that day, and if I did not get the paperwork in, there was a possibility we could have been put on a wait list and Anthony sent to another elementary school, I did not want to take that chance.

So I no longer have anxiety about my son starting elementary school. I can't wait for it now!

-Percy

Photos from City Heights Elementary School STAR Program

Another Reason to Support Marriage Equality for All

I am so sad when I hear stories like this. These are true stories of people affected by Prop H8 and it puts faces to same-sex marriages. There are thousands and thousands of other stories like this and I can't help but wonder if EQCA and other's leading the efforts to fight Prop 8 put out messages like this instead of messages to stroke their own egos (our ads and counter ads were the worst and they did not seem to listen to people's opinions prior to putting it out there), where we would be right now.

I had talks with friends during brunch this past weekend and we discussed where Prop 8 went wrong. We all agreed that we weren't able to put our message out first and additionally, we never put faces to the message we were putting out. Even in our "coaching" for TV and Radio, we were told not to talk about personal stories or experiences, but rather talk about the need and stick to the message that was provided. That's were we failed. We failed to engage Californians with the back stories to why Prop 8 is important. Maybe in the next round, we won't be so afraid to put the faces of people actually impacted by the measure.

So it may be a little too late, but maybe if the Supreme Court of California saw these video's they would rethink the validity of Prop 8.

-Percy

Image from 13 Love Stories

Where the Wild Things Are

I am so excited that this movie has been made. Maybe it's because my baby is actually growing up...why can't they just stay small and dependent. I guess that's not how it works.

I mean he is in pre-school/day care right now, but he has been there since he was a year old and I see it more like day care then school. I don't know is it really all that different...and maybe it is.

Anyway, Ross and I have been doing all the Kindergarten paper work for Anthony this past week. Filling out forms, scheduling doctor and dentist appointment. Making sure we have all the "requirements" ready to turn in. We have even scheduled a school tour with the principal next week.

Ross thinks we should hold him back a year since he turns 5 mid October. I on the other hand thinks we should put him in now and if he does not do well (which I am sure he will actually excel) we will just have him repeat Kindergarten again, it's not like holding him back in 2nd or 3rd grade. But I think it's time for him to get to learning, because I am afraid that he is just going to get really bored at pre-school. I think he is aching to learn.

The other source of anxiety is are we putting him in the right school in our district. I mean this elementary school is literally two blocks away from our home and is convenient for dropping off in the morning. But their API scores are a bit lower than some of the other schools in the area. Is this something I need to be concerned about at the K level? But we do like that it is more diverse (as far as the student population) than the other schools, plus they have a mandatory "violin" program for the 4th graders - which I LOVE...it's so Meryl Streep in Music from the Heart.

Another area of anxiety is him having two dads. How will this be addressed to his new friends, how will other parent's take this, how will the teacher make sure he is not alienated when teaching about families, and will they address the diversity of kids backgrounds in the school. I mean he has grown up in a diverse environment where he has been exposed to all types of families and I hope this will continue in a public education setting.

So for the past week, this and other questions have been swirling around in my head and I am making mental notes so that I can ask the principal next week on how they will address some issues that I am concerned about. Do most parents get pre-K anxiety too? I'm sure the issues are different though but is there such a thing as the parent school anxiety or am I over thinking again?

Sound in.

-Percy

Update 3/30/31: I guess the use of the word "anxiety" was not really what I was aiming for. I am not losing any sleep thinking about it and it's n0t consuming my thoughts. I just wonder if parents also had worries about their kid starting school...and I am assuming that it is normal. I am just curious for those parents who had kids who has birthdays towards the end of the year (Anthony is October) what made you decide to either start them or hold them back one more year. And for those who started their kids early...do you have regrets?

Photo from Stephen Salpukas Photography

Tips for Having a Good Life.

I received this today in an email and thought it was a pretty interesting list. So I thought I would share it with you.

What would you add to the list of "tips for a good life?" It is broken down to categories.

Health:

1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a Queen, lunch like a princess and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
5. Make time to practice meditation, yoga, and prayer.
6. Play more games.
7. Read more books than you did in 2008.
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10. Take a 10-30 minutes walk every day. And while you walk, smile.

Personality:

11. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12. Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
13. Don't over do. Keep your limits.
14. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.
16. Dream more while you are awake.
17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
18. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner of his/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others or remove negative people from your lives.
20. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
21. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
22. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
23. Smile and laugh more.
24. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Society:

25. Call your family often.
26. Each day give something good to others.
27. Forgive everyone for everything.
28. Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6.
29. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
30. What other people think of you is none of your business.
31. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

Life:

32. Do the right thing!
33. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
34. Faith and Love heals everything.
35. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
36. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
37. The best is yet to come.
38. When you awake alive in the morning, say thank you.
39. Your Inner most is always happy. So, be happy.

Last but not the least:

40. Pay it Forward. When something good happens to you, do something good for someone else.

I hope you enjoy these tips.

-Percy

Photo from Gloria Plunkett

40th Birthday Menu - Ready Set Eat

I met with Fabio Viviani today to go over the on-going saga of my 40th Birthday dinner. Yes Ladies and Gays...he is very good looking in person, a hugger, and is so incredibly nice. He wanted me to try out some recipes for the Big Four Oh, which will be celebrated at Cafe Firenze one day earlier than the actual date because Fabio will not be there on the actual date...but I am not complaining. Fabio and his Executive Chef, John, freakin' gave me food orgasm today and I can't wait to eat it again in just 3 weeks.

If you did not read about how this came to be, read the previous blog, T Minus Four Weeks.

So here's Fabio's menu for me...

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; Everyone, including the media, is saying that 40s are the new 30s, but only better. AND if Jennifer Aniston can own and work it, SO CAN I.

At any rate, I had elaborate plans to celebrate my 40th birthday in the Bay Area, a weekend full of great food and dancing with family and friends. However, it did not pan out. Ross' new eco/green store at the Santa Barbara Zoo is opening that weekend and he needs to be there. I didn't want to go to the Bay Area alone and celebrate without him...it just wouldn't be the same. My Bay Area peeps, I promise we will be having a reunion/party on a later date.

The other thought was to have a party here in the SB/Ventura/Ojai area. However, with work, Anthony, family, weddings, and life, it was just too much for me to figure out and when it came down to it, I really did not want to spend the money to do a huge party. It would have turned into something like My Super Sweet Fortieth, totally over the top, if I had it my way. Maybe for my 45th or 50th!

Therefore, my final option was to have a nice dinner with family and close friends, which is still like 20-25 people. I thought of having it at one of my favorite restaurants in the Ojai Valley, such as Bodee's, something low key and laid back, which is not really me, but you know I am flexible.

Then last week, I was at a wedding vendors networking soiree, Souly Wedding Vendors, and was talking about my upcoming birthday to my friend Wendy who owns Your Image Floral in Ojai. She said, "For your 40th there is only one option, Cafe Firenze!" She also works as the part-time event coordinator for the restaurant. Well of course, why didn't I think of that!? My friend and event/wedding colleague Fabio Viviani owns Cafe Firenze and is one of the chefs on Season 5 of Bravo TV's Top Chef. It never occurred to me, because Top Chef 5 has not yet ended and Fabio has been flying back and forth to NYC quite frequently. Wendy made a call to Fabio and he said he would get back to me this week.

Well I got an early birthday gift on Monday. Fabio said that he would indeed be in town for my birthday and would be happy to cook my birthday feast, at his restaurant, for my family and close friends. This is huge, not only because he is famous, but because his food is delicious and he is customizing a meal just for me. Now...that's the way to bring in the Four Ohs! No one really knows what I have in store yet...but if they are reading this, and know, you are getting an invite, all you need to know is that you will have an out-of-this-world food experience from the best celebrity chef (maybe I am a little biased...I did vote for him as my favorite on Top Chef 5)! Plus, and this is a BIG PLUS, MADONNA (Who's that Girl? YES...that Madonna), another personal friend, has agreed to do an acoustic set for my guests after dinner. WOW WOW WOW!

Ross and I are meeting with Fabio next Tuesday evening to taste and go over menus for my dinner. I can't wait. I wish I could invite you all to this feast, you know I would if I could, but unfortunately we had to limit the number of people to invite.

Fabio still won't tell me if he won Top Chef or not! Hmmm, I guess we will have to continue watching Top Chef on Bravo on Wednesdays at 10/9c The one thing I do know is that he is TOPS with me! Thanks Fabio!

-Percy

P.S. The Madonna thing was totally made up, the birthday boy can have his wish can't he? I thought it would be fun to throw in a fantasy piece while writing this blog, but the Fabio part is true.

Update: Fabio was eliminated tonight on Top Chef. We are still very proud of him for making the FINAL FOUR! Fabio you were great and you were robbed...damn that Stefan! :)

4 Minutes Video Photo from The Inspiration Room Daily and
Fabio Viviani Photo from Bravo

Life Changing Movie

Ross and I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire last night and I was totally slapped into reality. I realized that the comforts that we have here in the U.S. are far from the lives that others live in third world countries like India.

Though this movie was more about finding a lost love, it meant more to me than that. Throughout the movie I just kept thinking of my son, Anthony...living a life on his own without parents. I mean the first 30-45 minutes of the film focused on the lives of Jamal and Salim, brothers, who had to fend for themselves because their mother was murdered during a religious riot. The kids must have not been older than 4 and 6 years old, but yet they had to make a life living in India by themselves for the most part.

Some of the things they did and witnessed should never be experienced by kids at all. I was horrified, saddened and I wanted to get on a plane to India, Philippines, and other third world countries and save these children. I mean I know there is poverty, even here in the US, but to see images like this really shakes your core and it makes you think that despite how horrible you think your life is, someone's living a life more challenging.

I don't know how these kids do it. I know they are working for drug lords, war lords, etc, but the strength they have to endure to survive is amazing...I don't think I could do it and can't imagine my kid having to live a life like that. The movie mesmerized me and sure the bond between Jamal and Latika were the key to this movie, but the bigger message is life is to be lived and there is always something or someone that make you want to live your life, regardless of how hard it may be.

If you have not seen this movie...run out and see it today!

-Percy

Photo from Fox Searchlight

Parent's Resolution

I received this in a newsletter from Anthony's school and I thought it was pretty interesting and relevant. So I wanted to share it with other parents. I believe this list of resolutions first appeared in Family Circle. They say that the most important resolutions are worth stating so that we can focus in the right direction...so I am formally stating it on my family blog.

Here's the Parent's Resolution:

I will always love my children for who the are - not who I want them to be. It's an important distinction.

I will give my child space to grow, to dream, to succeed and even fail. Without space, not growth can occur.

I will create a loving home environment; regardless of what effort it takes at a given time.

When discipline is necessary, I will let my child know that I disapprove of what he does, not who he is. Again, it's a very important distinction.

I will set limits and help my children find security in the knowledge of what is expected of them. They will not have to guess what is right or wrong.

I will make time for all my children and cherish our moments together.

I will not burden my children with emotion and problems they are not equipped to deal with.

I will encourage my children to experience the world and all its possibilities, taking pains to leave them careful but not fearful.

I will try to be the kind of person I want my children to be; loving, fair-minded, giving, and hopeful.

It is a tall order, but these resolutions are worth the effort. At least I think they are. When carried out, they can make a real difference for all our children.

-Percy

Photo taken by Gloria Plunkett

Please Don't Divorce Us - Courage Campaign

We submitted our photo to this campaign and unfortunately our photo did not make it to this piece, never the less it's still a pretty touching video.

If you have not heard, Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and attempting to forcibly divorce 18,000 same-sex couples that were married in California last year? Married before the November 4, 2008 vote on Prop 8. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in this case on March 5, 2009, with a decision expected within the next 90 days.

The Courage Campaign has created a video called "Fidelity," with the permission of musician Regina Spektor, that puts a face to those 18,000 couples and all loving, committed couples seeking full equality under the law.

Please watch this heartbreaking video:

"Fidelity": Don't Divorce... from Courage Campaign on Vimeo.

After you watch the video, please consider signing the letter to the state Supreme Court at Courage Campaign and passing this video on to your friends. This list of 45 life lessons and Five to grow on was originally published in The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, OH and written by Regina Brett, to celebrate growing older.

So as I look forward to my own odometer turning 40 next month, I thought I would share Regina's list with you. When I read it, all I can think was...this list makes total sense!

So here's the list:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.

17. You can get through anything if you stay put in today.

18. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

36. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.

38. Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

42. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

43. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

44. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

45. The best is yet to come.

46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

47. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

48. If you don't ask, you don't get.

49. Yield.

50. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.
I hope this list made you think of your own life and that you enjoyed it. I have been thinking a lot about this lately and I have to hand it to my mom...she must have really been Superwoman.

I say this because as a father...there is not enough time in the day to do the things my mother did. I mean I work and by the time I get home from that hour commute, the last thing I want to do is cook, clean, etc. But my mother did that every night.

Sure she had help from my grandmothers when my brother and I got older, but as young kids, it was just her. How did she do it? She worked 9-5 like I do and had a commute. When she got home she would start cooking dinner for the family, then did dishes, swept the floors, and made sure me and my brother were put to bed. I can't even imagine how tired she was. Then she did it all again the next day. I on the other hand can barely get the energy to pick up the phone to call in a takeout order when I get home from work.

Do we adults of the 21st century really have that much more on our plate than our parents did? Or our priorities just so different from theirs? I just feel that I am so much more different from my parents. I want it easy and I want someone else to do it for me...I grew up in an era where convenience is key, maybe that's the problem, I have come to be accustomed to life being easy...which it never is.

I'm sure there are parents out there that have better time management and multitasking skills than I do and parents that still do what my mom did. Not a bad sight, considering we need the rain. Plus, it feels more like winter...sunny in the high 80s in January felt really odd. I know there is no way that I can live in the Northwest with the constant gray skies...it would just drive me crazy. Not that it's depressing, but I just enjoy the sun.

The song by the Eurythmics keeps playing over and over in my head. "Here comes the rain again, falling on my head like a memory, falling on my head like a new emotion..." Oh how Annie belted that song! Oh how I love that song!

A friend of mine posed this question to me today and it kinda threw me for a loop, "Am I depressed because I am sick, or sick because I am depressed?" That is a full loaded question right there folks! If you know me, you know that I am a fairly optimistic and upbeat guy, sure I have my days when I just want to stay in bed and feel sorry for myself...but generally I am a pretty Happy-Go-Lucky <del>chump</del> person. But when posed this question, I really started to internalize it and think...hmmm am I depressed because I am sick (which I have been for the last couple of days and could be possible) or sick because I am depressed (most likely not the case, but it is possible, I have never been evaluated for depression). But who knows? Maybe, I could be really depressed and making myself sick...I do worry a lot about things and there are days when I just want to stay under the covers. Maybe I am depressed because I feel like crap from being sick. It just keeps going round and round.

When someone poses a question to you like that, I think you respond in three ways.

Ponder the question and see how it may apply to your own life.

Take it as a cry for help and make sure your friend is okay?

Ignore it as a passing thought.

Well obviously I have not ignored it. Now that I have pondered it, I wonder if this person was calling out for help? Have I totally missed the message because I over thought the question? I know this person is okay...but should I say something? Better yet if you are reading this my friend, and truly need help, you know you can always come to me.

At any rate, that is my musing for the day. "Gray skies are gonna clear, put on a happy face. Brush off the clouds and cheer up, put on a happy face," has replaced the previously mentioned song.

One more thought...why do they call it the blues instead of the grays? Blue is such a happy color.

-Percy

Photo take from my office window at UC Santa Barbara

Michelle Obama - The New Fashion Icon

I just had to do a small post about Michelle Obama. Her inauguration couture were just fabulous. From the yellow (pale green) Isabel Toledo dress topped off with gloves by J. I just wish that the Jason Wu piece could have been a little more tight fitting, showing off more of her figure, but overall it was still youthful, bold, and fresh. To me they were both hits!

The big plus for me is that she used up and coming designers and not established ones. Makes me think that she could contact me at any moment to plan one of her future parties. Thank you Michelle for revitalizing the fashion world and giving us a new icon for great couture or even off the rack stuff.

-Percy

Pictures from Yahoo! Ross and I have been so overwhelmed by this journey with Barack and we are counting down to the time when this man will take helm of the most powerful nation on earth.

Yesterday, 1/18/09, as we were watching the inauguration concert, appropriately titled "We Are One," I could not help but be overcome by tears. From seeing Mary J. Blige singing Lean on Me to the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington D.C. and the Washington Youth Choir singing with celebrities, the music and the message was so HOPEFUL.The highlight though, was hearing Obama speak and giving us a preview of his soon to be historic and moving inaugural address.

I know Barack must be feeling the pressure that so many are putting on him. But I think what we have to remember is that this man is the symbol that all things are possible. We, as a nation, can now feel as though everything is possible, because Obama and his family inspire us to do so. As a nation we must finally come together, tear down walls, and help to make this country the best it can be. "We are One" NATION after all.

I am looking forward to the Obama era and looking towards the Dawning of a New Era!

-Percy

Photo from Yahoo! You know the blogging, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter generation that sits behind their computers and networks with people across the globe, updating their status and reading their "friends" current status. Social Media is like the new Happy Hour that just happens to occur 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, without the worry of waking up with a hangover or having to drive home drunk.

It has been great re-connecting with old friends from school and catching up with their lives. It has also given me the thrill of ignoring requests to connect with people I really don't want back in my life...those few that made my life a living hell at any point in my life. Additionally, meeting new people with the same interests has been great. These new social outlets have their pluses. However, I can also see why people are getting addicted to it. I bet FBA (Facebook Anonymous) groups will be forming soon, if they have not already.

Sure, on the web or in virtual reality, we can be anything we want to be. Our true selves may also come through, but is being virtual friends and real friends the same thing? I mean not knowing what a person's voice sounds like or even seeing what they look like in person is something that I value in my friendships. It gives me a point of reference to what they may be feeling or how they are reacting to something I have said. Above all the physical aspects are also important (touching, handshaking, hugging, etc.).

In this virtual platform...I have learned to give virtual hugs, gauge people's feelings by their writings, react to their pitch in their sentence structures, or worry about the lack of any written remarks. However, if I were to meet this person in a real setting...would we actually hit it off and become friends. On the other hand, will my image of them be "shattered" because what I pictured them to be and what they are in "real" person could be two different personas. Would that be a bad thing? Better yet, is that a bad thing?

As my own son grows up, I know he will meet friends and life long friends the old-fashioned way, through school, through others, work, etc. Nevertheless, what role will Social Media play in his social development? What kind of impact will that play? I am really not worried about it, but I am hoping that our kids will be able to interact and socialize the old school way as well, including going to a real bar when he is age appropriate and enjoying a real Happy Hour. I want him to learn to be present with the people he is with and genuinely enjoy their company without worrying whom just text him or tried to call him.

I would hate for my son to grow up living behind a computer or not being able to put his blackberry or iPhone down due to his ties to people. I just see so many teens and tweens texting away to people rather than talking. In some instances they are texting the people sitting right next to them. THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANT MY SON TO DO. I want him to have genuine and real communication with people...not electronic versions of it. I want him to interact, grow, and touch people he has in his life. I don't want his life so immersed in technology that he gives up going out and smelling the roses. Are these fears just an old man (to some 40 is old...though I feel like I am 20) being paranoid?

I am wondering how other parents are coping with this, especially those who are addicted to Social Media, like me. I guess one way to make sure they are not behind the computer all day is to set the example and step away from my own electronic devices everyday or even for the weekend. I don't know. Is this sort of interaction and means of communication just unavoidable? I would love to hear your thoughts.

-Percy

Logos from Facebook and Twitter

Simple Pleasures

As I sit at work <del>wasting time</del> thinking productively...I was pondering the question, "what are my simple pleasures in life?" We often think of what gives us pleasure, but I really think the small everyday things are truly what makes life happy and interesting.

So here's my simple pleasures list (in no particular order):

The sound of Anthony and Ross sleeping (snoring and all).

Rain tapping on the skylight.

Hearing Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" and Anthony saying Daddy is that your favorite song?

Anthony singing when no one is looking.

The way my son holds my hands.

The way Anthony taps my back while hugging me.

My dog Daisy snuggling at my feet.

Seeing Ross' face when he walks through the door.

The sound of Ross' voice when I am having a tough day.

Anthony running to me when I pick him up at daycare.

The feel of a hot shower.

Hearing the words "I Love You" from Ross and Anthony.

Seeing the view of Lake Casitas or the Santa Barbara Harbor when driving on Highway 150.

The taste of ice cream.

My mom's cooking.

Hearing my mom's voice on the telephone.

Looking through photo albums.

Friends Facebook updates.

The look a bride gets as the doors open to her walk down the aisle.

The look the groom gets when his bride walks down the aisle.

Disneyland.

I hope this inspires you to think of the little things that make you happy. It's just a great reminder that in the midst of all the craziness in our lives...the simple and everyday things can truly change your mood...even during the toughest times.

-Percy

Photo taken by Ross at Disney's Animal Kingdom in October 2007

What Happened to Winter?

Today is January 12, 2009 and it's supposed to be winter. I have my sweaters out and my wool pants too and I have not had the opportunity to wear them because of the gorgeous...I MEAN GORGEOUS weather we have been having lately. Welcome to Sunny California!

Sure, we got a weeks worth of cold stuff, but really not much of it. I don't know what to think and my body is going from hibernation mode to full fun in the sun mode.

Today on the coast, it is suppose to be 77 degrees and in my hometown of Ojai, it is suppose to be 87 degrees. What is up with that? I mean this is really messing up my Winter mindset. Must be global warming...

When I was driving to work today, I even noticed the trees that just recently lost their leaves, on Highway 150, had buds of leaves starting to come out. Nature and plants are even confused. But don't get me wrong...I don't mind this weather and actually love it, well next to Autumn (it's my season), but I also appreciate what Winter brings and wish that we could get some of the much needed rain and snow so that our water reserves will be okay for the real Summer days.

I am sure, when I am freezing my ass off again, I will complain that I wish it were warmer. For the time being, I will just enjoy this beautiful weather and hope for Jack Frost to make at least another showing before Spring.

-Percy

The Dawn of A New Year

It seems that everyone was looking forward to 2008 ending...I for one was on that train! But I woke up this morning, earlier that I was hoping, a little more positive and hopeful, knowing that today was the beginning of a GREAT NEW YEAR for the Beardsley-Sales Family and everyone all around!

Was 2008 really that bad for everyone? I mean sure we had the financial crisis, the housing crisis, etc., but in retrospect, was it really a horrible year? Was it bad from a personal perspective or a a more global one? Or did we gauge our discontent because all the craziness going on around us?

Personally, this year was just horrible from an emotional, financial, and business sense. But I am happy that my family remained healthy, was safe, and all in all we came out of it unscathed...maybe some bumps and bruises, but nothing time won't heal. The important thing is that we came through it together.

2009 brings so much hope. Today is the DAWN OF A NEW YEAR and A NEW ERA. I am looking forward to a positive, prosperous, healthy, happy, and hopeful year. There is so much to look forward to...such as January 20th when we inaugurate Obama as the US' First Black President. But on a personal level there will be so much going on in 2009 for the Beardsley-Sales' that we know it will be an incredible year.

May 2009 be good to you too. We wish you a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year!

Good Riddance 2008 and Welcome 2009! He has created a list that he keeps reciting and here's what he is hoping for...that is, if he is on the nice list and not on the naughty one. He does not want to get coal in his stocking. The first two is definitely his must have of the year.

Imaginext Adventures Jungle (Gorilla Mountain)

Fisher Price Go Diego Go! Did I really want toys on my list rather than world peace or prosperity for all when I was his age? Probably. It's just nice to enjoy the merriment of the holidays and to see it through growing kid’s eyes, totally innocent and un-jaded. Hope you have all been good and land on Santa's nice list too and that he gets you want you want on your Christmas List.

Another Christmas funny that has occurred this year is the story of our Nativity set. I explained to Anthony what a Nativity is and he kinda got it but not really. Well we have a village of vintage homes, near the Nativity set and one day, he started placing the people 2x2 in each of the homes. Ross asked him what he was doing...and he said, "they needed to have homes and they should not be outside and that each home needed two parents." Totally funny...so some homes have two dads, a dad and a mom, or two moms. He put the baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph since they all have halos, but all the other families got a farm animal. It was really cute.

Anyway, I hope that your holiday season is shaping up with some fun and unexpected moments and memories. Enjoy the season. Peace and Goodwill to all!

-Percy

Images/Photos from Porterfield's Fine Art and Percy Sales

Holilday Cheer

To get into the Holiday Spirit, the three of us, joined our friends John and Cesar and their son Justin at Disneyland. It was fun, but for the money we could have gone someplace else to get a better meal. For some reason I remembered the food being far better than what we had. Oh well...I guess it was worth it for the kids.

The next day, we got to Disney at 7:45 a.m. for the 8 a.m. gate opening. We have never experienced Disney in it's holiday splendor and we were just in awe from their decor. Everything from their 37' tree to Sleeping Beauty's Castle was splendid.

We were lucky to have fairly nice weather this weekend, though the morning was pretty cold, but the lines were not as bad as usual. We were amazed that we only waited 5 minutes for Nemo's Submarine, though at Toy Story Mania, Anthony and I waited a whopping 50 minutes in line, must be because it's their newest attraction.

We loved the decor in It's A Small World, which just reopened this month. The holiday decor in this iconic ride was awesome. Plus they sang a melody of It's A Small World with Deck the Halls and Jingle Bells, which was pretty cool. The other ride that was decked out, was the Haunted Mansion. They decorated it as the Nightmare before Christmas (we saw it for Halloween) and it's absolutely stunning.

The Holiday Parade was also pretty cool too, with real toy soldiers blowing their trumpets and Santa making an appearance and asking the crowds to sing Jingle Bells. Pretty fun.

Let's see what firsts happened this time? I finally convinced Anthony to ride the Matterhorn with me. He agreed, and throughout the ride in a muffled voice he just kept saying, oooh ohhh ohh...daddy is this ride almost over. He cried at the end, then said that was pretty cool and I will ride it again next time.

He really wanted to ride Soarin' Over California, and the ride operators tried everything to get him on the ride but he was just a tad short of the required 40". So they gave him a pass that will allow his entire family to ride it once he is tall enough. Maybe on our next trip back he can finally ride it.

We had a great time this trip...even though our friends could not keep up with us. They headed back to the hotel while the three of us drudged on. We love Disney and so glad we invested in our season passes! We were going to go back a second day, but unfortunately it was raining cats and dogs so we all just decided to head back home.

All in all Disney never disappoints. It is definitely the Happiest Place on Earth!

-Percy

Photos by Ross Beardsley

It's Starting To Look Like Christmas...

Well we have finally put up the Christmas tree and it's finally starting to feel like the holidays at the Beardsley-Sales'. I was looking for something to get me in the mood and I think putting up the tree last night got me there...it would have been better if I did not have this darn cold that is just draining me!

So Ross, Anthony and I put on Christmas music (CD we gave out as our card in 1999), broke out all the holiday paraphernalia and started the "holidification" of our home. Anthony hung up some ornaments, but I refused to let him handle any of my Radko glass ornaments. The non-breakable stuff was okay. Of course, who ends up breaking one of my precious ornaments...me...and the Jiminy Cricket Radko ornament that is now hard to find. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Now that the house is decorated, I need to get in gear and mail out our Holiday Cards. It's all done, just sitting here waiting to be addressed. I guess I will get those off today. I just wish I felt better and that my head was not so foggy.

I also need to start wrapping presents, which I actually enjoy doing. Notice in the picture the only gift under it so far is from Tiffany (I wonder who the lucky person gets that). So I will start wrapping the rest of the gifts once we locate them in all the hiding places. We also need to figure out what we bought for whom throughout the year. Last year, I almost re-gifted a gift to Ross' sister, Lori, got me the previous year. I thought I had bought it for her, but I was reminded that she gave it to me - at least Ross was paying attention. So after the cards this project will be next on my holiday check list.

On top of all this, I am putting on the final plans for a wedding that I am planning for 1/3/09. So I need to get it all together. I know this month is just going to fly by. Luckily, we have decided to not have our annual holiday party this year - Ross has instead organized a craft day with some friends and their kids. But I will be cooking Christmas Eve dinner for family.

Oh on another note, we were not able to go to the Santa Barbara Zoo for the Snow Leopard Festival. A day that they bring in tons of snow and have sledding for the kids. We were suppose to go at 8am this morning and hang out with Kevin Costner, Christine Baumgartner, and son Cayden, but again I felt like ***T! Ross kept saying are you sure...are you sure...and I finally told him to tell them I was too sick, maybe next time. So I had to give up snow time with Kev before the zoo opened.

Well I better get back to my holiday check list and get these holiday cards addressed and out the door.

-Percy

Photos by: Percy Sales

The First Blog

Happy Holidays. So here's our first post:

Well the New Year is dawning and the past year is now a distant memory, but what a year it has been for the Beardsley-Sales’.

Life in Ojai continues to be great. We are near family, near the beach, and close enough to the “big” cities, should we feel the need to get a little urban. We have become involved with many aspects of our community, making new friends, and enjoying our family time. We went green this year by buying a Toyota Prius and we love that we get almost 50 miles to the gallon.

Anthony has grown up so fast. He turned four in October and this little boy has so much personality. He loves to play pirates and is currently in love with anything Indiana Jones. He loves to pretend to sword fight, goes around playing karate, and all around being a boy. He also has an affinity to play Wii Sports, especially baseball, golf, and bowling. We can’t wait until the summer when he can actually play these games for real. We personally think he will make a great little baseball player. He also loves Disneyland and was able to go several times this year, thanks to our season passes. Anthony will start kindergarten next fall.

Ross continues to work at the Santa Barbara Zoo and is in the midst of opening up a new Eco Store. There will be some cool things in that store for people to buy…like Elephant Poo Paper (talk about recycling). He has traveled to several locations this year for buying trips, which has been great for him. He loves being Papa to Anthony and continues to help Anthony discover his creative side. He is currently venturing into the blogosphere, but has not made any concrete direction to what he will blog about, but we expect that by this time next year, he will become a true Blogger.

Percy became an online blogger this year (http://percysalesevents.blogspot.com/), starting his own event blog that has been getting about 500 hits each week and growing. He has been named one of the best event bloggers on the Web. He continues to work full time at UC Santa Barbara while running his own event company, Percy Sales Events. He’s a great dad and loves spending time with Anthony, who is definitely Daddy’s Boy. By the way, Percy will be turning 40 in March!

Ross and Percy legally got married on June 17, 2008, when the California Supreme Court overturned the marriage ban for gay and lesbian couples. Prop 8, which passed in November, has again banned equality and the right for two consenting adults to marry…should they choose. Luckily, the State of California is protecting the rights of gay and lesbian couples who got married before November 4th and working to keep their marriages legal. Ross and Percy continue to fight for marriage equality in the State of California and hopes that the California Supreme Court and the California State Legislators will find that separate is not equal and stand on the side of love. Next up…Marriage Equality on the Federal Level!

Our family continues to grow everyday. We are constantly amazed at how we, as individuals, and as a family learn something new on a daily basis. I guess it’s true…if you stop learning, you stop living. We are looking forward to 2009 and what it has in store for us…but we will always have fond memories of 2008.

We hope that your year was full and that 2009 brings you much happiness and good cheer. We wish your family Peace, Equality, and Love! Happy Holidays.

- Ross, Percy, & Anthony

Photos by: Gloria Plunkett, Ross Beardsley, Paul Wellman for Santa Barbara Independent
